When a company has an On-Premise Consumption License, it must also have a Server Permit (also known as an On-Premise Permit) to be able34h≤≥ to serve liquor, wine, and high-gravity beer to its customers (Liquor-by-the-Drink License).

Permits to work as a server are valid for five (5) years, beginning on the day they are issued. Here is a 2023 guide to passing your on-premise alcohol permit exam.

 

Requirements for On-Premise Alcohol Certificate

A number of prerequisites must be met before registering for an on-premises alcohol certificate exam. To proceed with the alcohol education course, the following conditions must be met:

  • The minimum age requirement for applicants is eighteen (18) years old.

  • Within one (1) year after the date on which they apply for a Server Permit, applicants are required to complete a Utah-Approved Alcohol Server Education — O-PASS

  • Completion of an alcohol education course does not automatically qualify one for a Server Permit.

  • New servers have a grace period of sixty-one (61) days after their first hire date to complete the prerequisites and obtain a server permit. This leniency is only available to a server once per employment move.

  • Applicants are prohibited from having a felony conviction for an offense that directly relates to whether or not the applicant is qualified to practice effectively, as decided by the commission.

  • Applicants must not have been convicted of any felony relating to the sale of alcoholic beverages, prohibited drugs, prohibited substance analogs, or any sex-related offense, or fraud, in the eight (8) years preceding the application.

  • Applicants and permit holders may not have had a prior employee or server permit or other similar permission granted in a foreign jurisdiction canceled by an issuing body within the last five (5) years.

  • No one may apply for a wholesale, retail, liquor-by-the-drink, or beer license or permit if they have any ownership stake in a license or permit that has been canceled by the using authority within the previous eight (8) years.

The certificate is accepted as a temporary card, but it is only good for 30 days while you wait for your county’s health department to give you your official food handler’s license.

Anyone who works in the food business and handles unpackaged food, ingredients, tools, or utensils that come into contact with food must have a permit.

And this is true for every sector that works with food in some way, whether in the hotel, restaurant, production, transport, packaging, etc. All of them must possess the right certificate authorizing them to do so.

Who Is Required to Have a Food Handler's Permit Card?

Every food worker in Utah is required by state law to undergo food handler training within 14 days of beginning employment. If you need to renew your license, you must finish the course within seven days of when your current license expires.

  • Replacement of fluids and electrolytes to prevent dehydration
  • Antibiotics for illnesses caused by bacteria, not viruses 

At-home remedies may also be employed for adults with a foodborne illness. These include taking over-the-counter medications such as Imodium A-D or Pepto-Bismol. But if you are sick with a foodborne illnesses seek medical attention.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , CDC,  issued a food safety alert regarding a foodborne illness outbreak of Salmonella Senftenberg from contaminated Jif Peanut butter.

Federal officials are investigating a multi-state outbreak. Currently, there are fourteen confirmed Salmonella cases from 12 different states. Two people were hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.

However, the true number of sick people is likely much higher.

If 100 people ate the contaminated Jif peanut butter 40 of those people, in all probability, will get sick. Ten of those people will likely be sick enough to see a doctor. If a person is sick with a foodborne illness the only way to know what made them sick is by providing a stool sample.

If three doctors ask for a stool sample and send samples to the lab, usually only one positive case is reported back to the CDC.

Having one confirmed case of a foodborne illness is significant because to get an accurate number you would have to multiply the number of confirmed cases by 40. In this outbreak it’s probably closer to 560 sick people from the contaminated peanut butter.

Most people will start showing symptoms 6 hours to 6 days after eating the contaminated peanut butter.

According to the CDC four of the five confirmed cases of Salmonella Senftenberg interviewed reported eating Jif peanut butter before getting sick, they all reported eating different types of peanut butter.

 

What Should You Do?

If you think you got sick from the contaminated peanut butter, contact your health care provider.

It’s important to check your kitchen for the recalled Jif peanut butter. Peanut butter has a long shelf life. If any of the recalled products are found; discontinue use, and do not eat it. Throw away the contaminated peanut butter or return to where purchased.

If the contaminated peanut butter touched a food preparation surface wash the surface with hot soapy water and use a sanitizer such as diluted bleach water. To make sanitizer water use about 1 T of plain unscented bleach per gallon of water.

The contaminated recalled peanut butter will have the identification number 1274425-2140425 and will have 425″ at the end of the first seven digits. This includes crunchy, creamy, reduced fat and natural. The number is usually found by the “best if use by” date.

When proper food safety measures are not taken by employees of a food establishment , people who consume that food must face the consequences of food-borne illnesses. The United States Government Disease Control and Prevention report indicates about 2 out of 10 people consume unsafe food daily.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), we can avoid foodborne illness if food safety is practiced  at every stage: food processing, harvesting, storage, circulation, cooking, and consumption.

Food safety ensures consumers stay healthy and keeps the community protected from foodborne illness. . In this blog, we will be discussing the importance of food safety, especially in  restaurants.  .

What Is Food Safety?

Food safety refers to the way you handle, prepare, process, and store your food to decrease and prevent contamination  that can lead to foodborne illness.

Use Disposable Gloves Correctly 

The use of disposable gloves is critical in enhancing food safety. Wearing gloves will create  a barrier between the germs on your hands and the food you are preparing. Wearing gloves will reduce cross-contamination and  may prevent foodborne illness. .

Single-use gloves should be used only once and disposed of immediately after completing a task.   

 

Furthermore, while using gloves, you should avoid touching your face or hair because you might transfer disease-causing pathogens that may cause contamination. 

Regular Washing of Hands

Proper handwashing will help reduce pathogens that cause foodborne illness. A handwashing sink must be conveniently located and accessible at all times. A handwashing sink must not be used for purposes other than handwashing.   Food employees should properly wash their hands using soap and hot water and dry hands with a single use paper towel. Hands should only be washed in a handwashing sink and never washed in a sink used for food preparation or dishwashing. 

Regular Disinfection and Cleaning Of Surfaces and Equipment

Food establishments  should always have a daily routine practice of cleaning and sanitizing food preparation surfaces and equipment.

Utensils should be washed using clean water and sanitized using bleach or quats  to eliminate harmful bacteria that can cause foodborne illnesses. 

Food equipment must be cleaned and sanitized before and after use.
